Dr. Edel Alonso has lived in Santa Clarita since 1987. For the last 16 years of her career, she taught and counseled students at COC as a full-time professor and counselor. She is most proud of her affiliation as the counselor for the students in the Math, Engineering, and Science Achievement (MESA) program as well as of having been elected by her faculty peers as Academic Senate President for 2 terms. After retiring from COC in June 2015, she ran and was elected to serve on the Board of Trustees in November 2016. Her work advocating for students continues as a member of the Board. She is committed to serving students and ensuring excellent quality educational opportunities in the Santa Clarita Valley.
Edel is passionate about providing educational opportunities that combine academic learning with career training to prepare students for successful futures. Having taught and counseled at the high school, community college, and university level, she dedicated her professional life to helping students achieve and succeed in their personal, educational, and career goals. Prior to COC, she worked for the Wm. S. Hart H.S. district as a counselor first at Hart and then at Valencia.
Edel is saddened by the loss of her husband Charlie Armstrong. They were married for 39 years but he passed away on Veterans Day in November 2019. He will not be at her side for this second campaign but she finds strength in knowing that he will be with her in memory. Charlie was a life-long educator and Edel's biggest supporter!
